Angry Letter to Nigerian Youth: The future is here with us..

By Bayo Adeyinka My dear Nigerian Youth, It was Albert Einstein that said “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it”. That, unfortunately, is what you are doing. You complain about the problems and challenges but that’s all you do. You follow the same people who created the problems and eulogize them to high heavens. You are guilty of lack of depth and originality. Your level of thinking is pedestrian. Since no one can rise beyond the level of their thinking, you have remained at the aboriginal state of being- the same with your progenitors. Universities and tertiary institutions shape and mould their products such that they stand out in the originality of their ideas. Alexandria, the first University in the world was a centre of enlightenment. Harvard turns out products who impact the world. Yale and MIT products leave their indelible footprints everywhere they go. Our own local universities and tertiary institutions churn out mass ignoran

Overcoming Nigeria’s water, sanitation challenges..

IN an era that is witnessing the resurgence of Ebola and other contagious haemorrhagic viral diseases, having access to running water may well be considered a national security issue. Adequate water supply is a problem that faces most of us daily, almost regardless of income bracket. If you live in a rural area, you probably have to go and fetch water from a well, stream or river. If you’re wealthy enough to build your own house, you probably have to sink a borehole. If that house is in a sand-filled area, highbrow or not, you either have to drill past the 200 metre mark to get useable water or contend with the contaminated water available at shallower depths. The person who can solve the challenge of getting clean pipe borne water into every household in Nigeria will be a national hero.  The UNICEF sponsored Water and Sanitation Summary Sheet for Nigeria authored by the Water and Sanitation Monitoring Platform says: “Water and sanitation coverage rates in Nigeria are amongst the

Breaking: Supreme court dismisses Wike’s suit against tribunal..

Image
By Edward Jaleyemi The Supreme Court on Tuesday, dismissed the suit filed by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, challenging the jurisdiction of the Rivers governorship election petition tribunal to hear a petition by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dakuku Peterside.  Wike and Peterside In his argument, Wike had argued that the tribunal sitting in Abuja had no jurisdiction over matters that transpired in the state, contending however, that the tribunal should have sat in Rivers State and not Abuja. However, the tribunal was moved to Abuja on the ground of security concerns, like those of Akwa I‎bom, Yobe, Adamawa and Borno.  The appeal court had earlier ruled that the tribunal could sit in Abuja to handle Rivers election petitions. Recall also that in its ruling on Saturday, the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal, had sacked Wike as governor of the state, and ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a fresh electio

Ministerial List: Buhari’s has made right choices – Atiku..

Image
* Says Buhari has made right choices  Former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, affirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari, has made right choices with the nominees in his incoming cabinet, expressing optimism that they will be agents of change, who will place the country above any parochial interest. Atiku-and-Buhari Atiku, who spoke in Kano, through the chairman, Atiku Loyalists Group, Alhaji Muhammadu Sugar, against the backdrop insinuations, that he (Atiku) was not happy with the list of ministers, stated that he was happy with the list.  Sugar, pointed that the calibre of persons who made the list have provided him (Atiku) hope that the country was on the right path. Also refuting media reports that Atiku was among the big losers on the ministerial list, for not having a candidate, Alhaji Sugar stressed that in the first place, Atiku never sought for any of his supporters to be on the list.  According to him, the minis

Spain dissolves congress, holds general election Dec 20...

By Edward Jaleyemi Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Monday officially confirmed that the next Spanish general election would be held on December 20. Rajoy made the announcement at a press conference in the Palacio de la Moncloa following a meeting of his cabinet, which officially dissolved the current session of the Spanish Congress. Rajoy had earlier said December 20 would be the date for the elections during a TV interview on October 2. This is the 10th legislature since the death of General Franco in November 1975 and also the longest in that 40-year-period. Rajoy had given the need for his government to pass it’s budget proposals for 2016 as the reason for delaying the elections, although critics have pointed out that December 20 is far from an ideal date. Many people will have either started their Christmas holidays, or faced the prospect of travelling to their home towns twice in a week, or sending in a postal vote (which needs paperwork to be completed) in order to
