Matters arising from Falae’s kidnap..

Image
By Edward Jaleyemi THERE are many reasons to fear criminals. There are many reasons for which, when they are caught (especially by a mob) the urge to deprive them of their most prized possession – their lives – can be so overwhelming. The fragile foundations of the nation’s unity and stability were visibly shaken when one of our most respected living elder statesmen, Chief Olu Falae, was kidnapped by “Fulani herdsmen”. The spark of controversy this ignited set the nation on edge, as Falae’s Yoruba ethnic group was engaged in a face-off and media exchanges with the Fulani ethnic group. The Yoruba, through Afenifere’s spokesman, Chief Yinka Odumakin, accused “Fulani herdsmen” of invading farmlands in many parts of their homeland, killing, raping women, harassing villagers and involving themselves in abominable activities. Falae The Fulani, through the National Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Baba Ngelzarma, debunked th

Buhari’s ministerial nominees not the best — Sarah Jibril..

Mrs. Sarah Jubril, Nigeria’s first female presidential candidate, was Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and Values. In this interview, she blamed some of government functionaries and Jonathan’s appointees for the woes the immediate past administration suffered. She also frowns at the infighting and alleged impunity in the current administration and says that implementation of ethics and values in the polity is the surest way to rescue the country from the clutches of corruption. H er assessment of President Buhari’s fight against corruption It is a worthy fight, a good fight on behalf of all of us. However, it is a continuous fight because even the previous administration talked about zero tolerance for corruption, that was what late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was talking about. The fight this time is coined as fighting corruption for change. The previous administration mentioned about fighting corruption by transformation agenda. The

DSS commissions 385 officers, to tackle insecurity..

Image
By Edward Jaleyemi DEPARTMENT of State Services (DSS) weekend, in Lagos, commissioned 385 cadet officers in a bid to combat the rising security challenges in the country. The 385 officers were the lucky ones that successfully went through 10 months of rigorous professional, academic and physical training and were certified fit to serve the nation in their capacity as members of DSS, out of the 459 cadet officers that started the training late last year. The officers were commissioned amidst promises by the DSS to COLLABORATE  more with other sister security agencies in its fight against insecurity and to ensure that recruitment into the Service was merit-based in keeping with its extant guidelines. Speaking at the passing out parade at the State Service Academy (SSA), Lagos State, the Director General, SS, Mr. Lawal Daura, said gone were the days when misfits or non-eligible candidates found their way into the Service. “The aim is to ensure that only the right calibers of

Is this secession threat, a crack on the wall?

A man who stands for nothing, will fall for anything – -Malcom X AN Igbo proverb says “If you know what will bring dispute don’t do it”. This implies that when a person or group of persons, decide to do things that will bring dispute, it is either that they have assessed their victim as a weakling, or they simply think that they can cause trouble, and get away with it. I have wondered why after 55 years as a nation, Nigeria has remained unable to manage cows, and with all she has, as a people, she has failed woefully to address such a simple matter as keeping cows out people’s farms, gardens, and public places. The big surprise to any normal person is the ease and comfort, which our leaders in the past and present, rationalise, and condone such an unusual matter as the continued ravaging menace of the so called Fulani herds men in this country. The real herdsmen of cows are Fulanis from the north and were   usually simple minded humble fellows, but that was in the yester years.
